Permeke Museum cafeteria and bookshop

Following extensive renovations from 2020 to 2024, the Permeke Museum commissioned Rotor to design the interior of its cafeteria and bookshop. Housed in the former modernist home of Belgian painter Constant Permeke, ‘De Vier Winden’, designed by architect Pierre Vandervoort between 1928 and 1930, the museum showcases numerous artist’s works, alongside creations by his contemporaries.

The furniture design draws inspiration from the house's architecture, incorporating simple forms and a limited material palette. Two main sources of reclaimed materials were used: curved plywood radiator covers from Brussels office buildings and glued laminated timber. The woodworkers at Design With Sens, who crafted the entire furniture collection, also used reclaimed chipboard for the furniture’s structure and interiors. Aside from the screws, every element was made using reused materials, including door handles, washbasin, table legs, and chairs. The bar and bookstands are fitted with wheels, allowing the space to be easily reconfigured for various museum events.
