Break the Cycle
In The Architectural Review’s issue on Circularity Michaël Ghyoot and Tom Schoonjans take a stance on the limitations of circular practice under capitalism. Circular construction promises a radical new building system based on degrowth and a reduction of discarded material. But while activities such as salvaging building materials for reuse are far less polluting and energy-intensive than the industrial production system, they nonetheless rely on a system that is still widely linear. By developing tactics to work with an extractivist construction industry, circular practices run the risk of distracting from the need to reconfigure the system itself.
