Demolition of office buildings in Brussels between 1995 and 2021

Carrying out an inventory of buildings demolished in Brussels between 1995 and 2021, the authors of this article found that 547 buildings of over 3000m2 were demolished during this time period. 117 of these were office buildings. While some demolished office buildings were replaced with new buildings of the same function, an increasing number were replaced by housing in response to the need to accommodate the city’s growing population. However, this also raises concerns about the impact of these demolitions on the city’s cultural heritage and environmental impact of material use.
